Death Squared

Death Squared

Death Squared is multi-player puzzle game about cooperation, communication and robot explosions.

A rich multi-player game With a meta UI

The narrative of the game involved the player taking on the role of a robot tester who interacts with an AI in the mould of Siri or Hal, with the UI design taking cues from retro-futuristic interfaces seen in pop culture. Taking on a very minimal, functional aesthetic, we used common UI elements such as status messages, loading bars and the like to deliver content, progress the story and some fun puns.

This game is an absolute blast to play. 10/10 would die again.

UX & UI for Console gaming

Designing the experience for a console game required a shift of thinking from my previous experience in desktop and mobile interfaces such as websites and apps. Firstly, the scale of the screen had to be considered. As the viewing position is likely to be much further than other screens, elements needed to be larger in scale. Secondly, the input method would typically be a console controller with a D-pad. This meant that menu items would need to be arranged sequentially and in easy-to-use rows or columns as a user might need to move the active selection from the first item to the last item, cycling through all other items in the process.
